Gabinfo, Mozambique’s state agency responsible for accrediting journalists, today called on professionals to report false content posted on the Internet widely referred to as “fake news”.
In a statement, Gabinfo said journalists must report on “all forms that stain the profession, with a focus on the circulation in social networks of false content whose authorship is attributed to reliable sources”.
The position follows a letter sent by Lusa’s Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA), Nicolau Santos, to Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, and the secretary-general of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo), the ruling party.
In the letter, Santos clarified that the news agency “has nothing to do with” texts identified in some blogs on the Internet, although “authorship is being attributed” to them.
In the same document, Santos expresses permanent availability of the agency to clarify, immediately, what news is their responsibility.
“The Information Office, welcomes the position of the Board of Directors of Lusa, whose purpose is to restore the truth of the facts,” read the Gabinfo statement.
