The Associação Académica de Maputo women’s senior volleyball team was crowned two-time regional volleyball champion after winning the final this Wednesday, December 21, againstPolice VII from Botswana.
The men, in a fiercely contested game, allowed a turnaround and victory went to the hosts, Green Búfalo from Zambia.
The women’s Académica team, after overcoming Prisons from Zambia, faced the champions of Botswana, who did not make the task of the Mozambicans easy. Académica ended up winning 3-0, revalidating the title they had won in January of this year in the Pavilion of Eduardo Mondlane University.
The men’s final was closer, with Lusaka’s Olympic Youth Development Centre full of spectators cheering the home team, Green Buffalo, who fought to save the honour of the hosts.
Académica de Maputo managed an initial advantage by winning the first two sets, but allowed a comeback to two all, taking the game to a fifth and final set. Leadership alternated until the “students” showed some defensive weakness, ending up losing the set by 15-13, and leaving the final score at 3-2.
