ABSA reinforces support to Mozambique’s culture with Xiquitsi Project

Culture is the soul of a country and an essential driver for its development. Absa Bank Mozambique believes that investing in Culture is investing in the future, creating opportunities and transforming lives. In 2024, the Bank reinforced its commitment to promoting art and music by supporting the Xiquitsi Project, an initiative which has brought the magic of classical music to hundreds of young Mozambicans, providing them with new perspectives and opportunities.

This support is part of Absa’s citizenship strategy, which sees culture as a powerful means of social inclusion and empowering talent. More than just an artistic initiative, the Xiquitsi Project has been a true instrument of transformation, allowing children and young people aged 6 to 25 to develop their potential through the collective practice of music.

Impact of Absa Bank Mozambique support

With Absa’s support, Xiquitsi has promoted the musical training of young Mozambicans, opening doors for them to a promising future. In 2024, the project promoted several activities that helped develop artistic and social skills in participants, including:

Training of Mozambican orchestras and choirs. More than 71 students joined the project, totalling 267 students who raised the technical level of the musicians.

Internal auditions. Three editions were held throughout the year, which opened space for new talents, ensuring the progress and continuous development of the students.

Public presentations. Around seven events presenting classical performances, including concerts and other types of celebrations, bringing classical music closer to Mozambican society.
Masterclasses and workshops. Seven exchange sessions were held with nationally and internationally renowned musicians from Brazil and South Africa, making the project’s students more competitive in the market.
Extension of the “Music in Schools” programme. Around 1,900 students from schools in the city and province of Maputo were impacted by the exchange of impressions with the project.

Secondary and higher education of students abroad. Three students were selected by the Professional School of Arts of Covilhã, expanding their professional prospects.

For Tânia Oliveira, Marketing and Corporate Relations Director at Absa Bank Mozambique, this support goes beyond music and is part of a larger commitment to society.

Seeing these young people grow and evolve is the greatest proof that this investment has a real and positive impact on society.”

Since 2017, Absa Bank Mozambique has been a key partner of the Xiquitsi Project, enabling hundreds of children and young people to access musical training and develop their skills in an environment that encourages discipline, teamwork and creativity.

The Xiquitsi Project is not just a classical orchestra. It is a dream come true for many young Mozambicans, proving that music can be a path to social transformation and a better future.

With this support, Absa Bank Mozambique reaffirms its mission to contribute to a more inclusive country, where culture, education and talent always find new opportunities to shine.
