Much of the southern Mozambican city of Matola was plunged into darkness on Friday night by an abortive attempt to steal cables from an electricity sub-station.
According to a release from the public electricity company EDM, the thief was a security guard who was supposed to protect the Maputo gas-fired combined cycle power station, of which the sub-station forms part.
The man bungled his attempted theft, and lost his life in the process, causing a short circuit that cut off the power to vast areas of Matola.
A team from the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) was called to the power station and removed the body. Beside the body, SERNIC found tools intended to vandalise the cables.
Theft of cables and other electrical equipment is costing EDM millions of dollars every year.
