The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) and Abel Xavier reached an agreement yesterday to extend the contract of the Portuguese-Mozambican coach as national coach, but with the new contract now subject to objectives and of shorter duration.
Will Xavier’s previous contract was for two years, with the main objectives being the renewal of the national team, the expansion of the range of selectable players and an increase in competitive level, the new contract aims at qualifying for CAN-2019 as its main target .
The contract therefore lasts a year and a half, that is, until June 2019, the height of the CAN, which will take place in Cameroon.
“We intend to extend this contract because a part of the requirements of the previous one, which was the renewal of the team and elevation of the competitive levels, was fulfilled. In this new contract we will be more demanding, which is why it is a contract by objectives, having as horizon the CAN-2019. The balance we make of our association is positive. Of course we wanted to be in CAN-Interno-2018, but we could not. In substantial terms, there are two things that change: this contract has no time horizon, works by objectives and will last 18 months, that is, a year and a half, against the two years of the previous contract,” president of FMF Alberto Simango Jr. explained.
“It is a commitment of maximum exigency, because this is the second cycle that we start today. We have been raising the competitive levels of the National Team in a process that is being assimilated by the players. My priority has always been clear: to leave a mark and promote the growth of football in the country that has seen me born, working for results and maintaining the respect that the world has for Mozambique right now,” Abel Xavier said, openly accepting reaching CAN-2019 as a target.
Abel Xavier has been training the “Mambas” since February 2016
