Mozambique: Teachers denounce 'compulsory transfers' as a form of 'psychological pressure'
Gabriel Mateus, kidnapped on July 18 in Muxungué in Sofala province, by supposed members of a “death squad”, was found dead on Saturday. The man, said to be a leading Renamo activist in Muxungué, was found with signs of having been tortured.
Also in Muxungué, another Renamo member called Manuel, a chicken vendor by trade, is presumed to have been abducted on Sunday 31 July. The man left his stall with an individual not recognized by the local community.
According to witnesses, the man came to Manuel’s stand and declared that he wanted to buy all the chickens, but because, he said, he had left his money at home, he asked Manuel to go with him to collect it.
As of Monday, Manuel, who agreed, has not been seen again.
The Secretary of Maguide in Muxungué, Manuel Chitua, was also abducted by gunmen last week,
with no further news of his whereabouts surfacing.
