Abandoned schools premises in Maputo become havens for criminals and garbage dumps, according to residents.
The old Unidade 24 and Munhuana primary schools reveal the sorry state of affairs and the lack of solutions for the scenario.
Unidade 24 Primary School was closed in 2016 due to its state of degradation and rising water table levels – much to the criminals’ delight. In addition to giving them shelter, it has become a garbage dump.
Residents in the neighbourhood speak of “constant rapes and robberies”, Miramar reports, simultaneously complaining of the increased expense of sending their children to schools further away from home.
The Munhuana Primary School has also been abandoned for a long time, and again serves as a hang-out for criminals.
Maputo City Education Department is aware of the problem and is trying to secure funding to rehabilitate the Unidade 24 school. As a result of the complaints, work is underway to turn Munhuana Primary School into a secondary school.
