The Mozambican health authorities on Friday (August 21) reported a further 80 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease, most of them in Maputo city and province.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, since the first case was diagnosed on 22 March, 83,886 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 1,622 of them in the previous 24 hours.
1,201 of the samples were tested in public facilities, and 421 in private laboratories. The private sector only tested samples from Cabo Delgado (221) and from Maputo city (200).
Of all the samples tested, 578 were from Maputo city, 388 from Maputo province, 265 from Cabo Delgado, 117 from Nampula, 90 from Gaza, 72 from Niassa, 56 from Tete, 44 from Sofala, 10 from Zambezia, and two from Manica.
1,542 of the samples were negative, and 80 tested positive for the coronavirus. This brought the number of confirmed cases in Mozambique since the start of the pandemic to 3,195.
79 of the new cases are Mozambicans and one is a Portuguese citizen. 43 are women or girls and 37 are men or boys. Eleven are children under the age of 15, 15 are adolescents and youths in the 15-24 age bracket, 50 are adults aged between 25 and 64, and three are over 65 years old. In one case, there was no information about age.
37 of the cases are from Maputo city, and 20 from Maputo province (16 from Matola city, three from Namaacha district and one from Boane). Nine cases are from Pemba, capital of Cabo Delgado province, and a further nine are from Nampula (three from Nampula city, one from the port of Nacala, three from Nacala-a-Velha district, and one from Mossuril).
There are also three cases from Gaza, (one from the provincial capital, Xai-Xai, and two from the town of Chokwe), one case from Tete city, and one case from Chimoio, capital of Manica province.
In accordance with standard Ministry of Health procedure, the 80 new cases are now in home isolation, and their contacts are being traced.
The Ministry added that 64 Covid-19 patients have been hospitalized at some stage during their illness. Over the last 24 hours, three patients hospitalized in Beira have been discharged, but will continue treatment in home isolation. Eight patients remain hospitalized in isolation wards – seven in Maputo city and one in Gaza.
Over the same 24 hour period, a further 26 patients made a full recovery from Covid-19 (18 of them in Gaza, three in Maputo province, three in Cabo Delgado and two in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 1,406 (44 per cent of all positive cases).
As of Friday, the geographical breakdown of all 3,195 positive cases, by the provinces where they were diagnosed, was as follows: Maputo city, 1,009; Maputo province, 587; Cabo Delgado, 550; Nampula, 494; Gaza, 158; Sofala, 120; Tete, 66; Manica, 64; Zambezia, 55; Inhambane, 54; Niassa, 38.
Mozambique’s key Covid 19 statistics are now: 3,195 confirmed cases, of whom 1,406 have made a complete recovery, and 1,765 are active cases. 24 Covid-19 patients have died, 20 from the disease and four from other causes.
Looking only at the active cases, Maputo city and province now contain 58 per cent of them.
