Mozambique: State Council and Budget on the agenda of the first parliamentary session

Mozambicans must revolt against everything that divides them and draw on history’s examples of patriotism to promote economic and social progress of the country.
Such was the appeal from the President Filipe Nyusi voiced yesterday in Manica province on the inauguration of a monument erected in memory of the heroes of the Báruè rebellion and in recognition of the sacrifices of the Makombes in the struggle against oppression and Portuguese colonial domination.
“Solidarity, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence between us must continue to be our trademark,” the president said.
According to Nyusi, Mozambicans should own their own destiny and draw on the Makombes’ examples to overcome obstacles in the present and build a nation where freedom, inclusion and respect are the main pillars.
“We are here to do justice to our own history. Yesterday, the territory, in the view of the Makombes, was the surrounding region of Báruè. Today, with Portuguese colonialism defeated and national independence proclaimed, Mozambican territory has changed from Rovuma to Maputo, from Zumbo to the Indian Ocean, where our development programmes materialize,” President Nyusi said.
“We came here to review our secular history. This moment forces us to return to the recent past and follow in the footsteps of our compatriots who, led by the Makombes more than 100 years ago, provided examples of true valour,” Nyusi said, going on to mention other Mozambicans who fought colonization, among them the Mawewe, Muzila, Ngungunhana, Comala, Cupula Muno, Medi Voloy, Mussa Quanto, Nharinga and Mutapa.
For the president, peace for our ancestors is to see all of us free, even those who are not inspired by them. This is the ideal of the early days of resistance and the attempt to supplant the Portuguese colonial system, a dream finally materialized on June 25, 1975.
Therefore, according to the president, June 25 marks the victory of the Báruè revolt.
“This is the holistic and continuous reading we must make of our past, where we find the foundations that lead to the more structured form of Mozambican nationalism. These are the foundations for strengthening our peace, our sovereignty and our national unity,” he said.
The history of Mozambique, President Nyusi said, is rich in achievements and fine examples. Today we own our own destinies. The Báruè Revolt was a historical landmark in Mozambican resistance to the Portuguese colonial yoke, and helped drive the success of nationalism.
“Each of us must make a contribution on various fronts, be it in agriculture, education, health, defence of the country, politics or other sectors. Let us be masters of our own destiny,” the president said.
The centenary of the Báruè revolt was celebrated under the motto “Strengthening national unity, peace and development in Mozambique”. The event drew thousands of people to Catandica from various parts of the country and neighbouring Zimbabwe.
The president returned to Maputo yesterday at the end of a two-day working visit to Manica.
