The rains falling throughout most of the south of the country continue to cause destruction and suffering for many families in the city of Maputo. Yesterday (13-02), a family living in Magoanine A neighbourhood’s Block 12 saw their house collapse before their eyes, Integrity reports.
According to Luis, who lives in the neighbourhood, the house, its foundations swallowed by rainwater, already showed signs of giving way in the early hours of the morning. The family had time to leave before the worst happened and the house finally collapsed.
Mrs Adelina Mondlane’s family is not currently benefiting from any support from the authorities and has found shelter in the home of a close relative who has extended a helping hand.
Since the first day of the rains, the authorities in the Magoanine neighbuorhood have carried out awareness campaigns urging communities to leave risk areas. The team comprises the district director of health and agriculture, district police commander, engineers and the local natural disaster management committee.
More than 16 blocks In the Magoanine A neighborhood are at risk. In block 18C alone, for example, more than 22 houses are flooded. Some families have already left, but others, with nowhere else to go, remain, putting their lives at risk.
