Mozambique Elections: 'Unprecedented alliance' to contest election results - opposition
Conselho Municipal da Beira / Daviz Simango
“The country, lovers of peace and freedom and all those who appreciate honesty are in mourning,” Mayor of Beira Daviz Simango said on Wednesday morning in a message addressed to the Catholic church and all Mozambicans on the death of former bishop of Beira, Dom Jaime Gonçalves, adding that he considered him “a great man who, with his cassock and his knowledge, gave voice to those who couldn’t get their voices heard”.
As leader also of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), Simango saw Dom Jaime as the most visible figure of reconciliation and peace in Mozambique, a figure with his own voice who spoke his mind and in so doing gave voice to the feelings of the people.
“A voice they tried to silence many times but could not, because the voice had a strength, it was inspired,” said Simango. Dom Jaime was a figure “beyond Beira and the borders of Mozambique and gave hope to lovers of peace, to those who love their neighbour and yearn for reconciliation”.
Simango urged Mozambicans to look at this death and reflect on how Dom Jaime had departed from life leaving his country in a political, social and economic condition plain for all to see.
“The country does not live in peace, our people are increasingly poor. The economic situation is increasingly impoverishing families, products become increasingly inaccessible. The country is in a fragile state, where there is still exclusion and people still do not understand that the interests of a particular group, the subjects of a particular group, do concern us, and we have to live with each others’ concerns.”
The mayor of Beira said he would ensure the conditions necessary for a dignified funeral and hoped that “this hero who transcended borders would one day be recognized as a national hero”.
A plot next to the grave of Dom Sebastião Resende in the Santa Isabel cemetery has been prepared for the funeral on Saturday morning (April 9).
