The Mozambican employment market took on 85,221 new employees during the second quarter of the year across the country, far exceeding the 38,350 first quarter figure.
Jobs created in this period include 10,679 Mozambican workers recruited for South Africa mines, against 3,780 in the previous quarter. South African farms recruited 2,679 people, compared with 895 in the first quarter.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MITESS), Maria da Graça Mula Macuacua, said that Sofala, Maputo and Manica provinces stood out in terms of numbers of jobs created in this period, with new jobs in the Mafambisse (Sofala), Xhinavane and Maragra (Maputo) sugar companies.
The MITESS labour market newsletter records that, with the exception of Niassa and Gaza which experienced some job reduction as a result of decreasing investment, all provinces recorded growth in terms of new jobs.
By province, Manica ranked first with 16,855 filled jobs, followed by the city of Maputo with 16,073, Sofala (14092), Nampula (14011) Maputo Province(12943), Zambezia (9830), Tete (6947), Cabo Delgado (6061), Gaza (5538), Inhambane (4,260) and Niassa with 3,586 jobs created during the second quarter.
The labour market newsletter is published by the National Directorate of Labour Market Observation, an institution working within MITESS and responsible for collating data in order to provide a unified perspective of the labor market.
The information collected is then shared with all stakeholders, including ministries, investors and other public and private institutions.
MITESS is responsible for labour policies and administration in Mozambique, harmonising initiatives on employment data and working to organise the market and help the economy in terms of information and decision-making for investors, as well as contributing to procedural and administrative expediency, including the easing and improvement of the business environment.
