Mozambique: Four people killed by terrorists in Balama - AIM report

At least 82 motorists caught during routine road safety operations on national highways last week are being detained for attempting to bribe Mozambique police and transit police.
The detentions occurred when motorists sought to avoid fines by offering bribes of between 50 and 2,500 meticais, police spokesman Inácio Dina announced at a press briefing in Maputo yesterday.
“We will continue to fight any kind of corruption ruthlessly, no matter where it occurs,” Dina said.
It is rare for the police to detain motorists in number for attempted corruption, which Dina explained as the result of the intensification of surveillance by the PRM throughout the country.
“Our level of presence and supervision on the road were intensified in order to cover possible situations of road insecurity that had been verified. It is as a result of this that the numbers of motorists’ detention increased,” he said.
Dian appealed to motorists to use their money to regularise their own situation and that of their vehicles rather than attempting to use it to evade fines, thereby committing another crime.
“Using money to evade fines is a crime, and we are relentless regarding this type of act. Our appeal is precisely that similar acts do not happen,” he said.
The city of Maputo leads the list of provinces where there have been cases of attempted corruption, with 29 detainees. Then follow the central province of Tete (13 detainees), southern province of Maputo (12), Sofala, centre (10), Nampula, north (seven), Zambezia, centre (five), Cabo Delgado and Niassa, north (one each) and Inhambane, south (one).
