Seventy-eight Mozambican citizens were repatriated across the border at Ressano Garcia, Moamba district, Maputo province, yesterday without the prior knowledge of the Mozambican authorities.
Some of those repatriated had served jail sentences in South Africa, while others had entered South Africa illegally.
National Migration Service [SENAMI] spokesman Celestino Matsinhe explained that this type of procedure should usually have at least a week’s advance notice.
Matsinhe said that, in view of this episode, discussions would take place with SENAMI’s South African counterpart to avoid future repatriations without the national authorities’ advance notification.
Some of those returning from South Africa report cases of abuse by the South African authorities.
