Over 60 Malawians have been arrested in Mozambique for unknown reasons after the buses they were travelling in to South Africa were stopped by security authorities.
One of the arrested people, Martin Munkhowo from Mzimba, said the security stopped the buses and ordered everyone out of the buses.
“They took us to a police station in Nyambane district where we have been for a week now. Our passports and other personal belongings have been confisticated from us. They are beating us severely so much that one of us fainted yesterday,” said Munkhowo.
He said the authorities have not told them why they have been held there but he suspects it has to do with the insecurity following skirmishes between the rebels Renamo and ruling party Frelimo.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Katsaira said he is yet to get details on the issue.
But he descrribed the matter as sensitive and diplomatic.
He said the government would handle the issue through normal official channels.
