More than 4,300 cattle have died in the drought in central and southern Mozambique. Gaza and Maputo provinces are the worst hit, accounting for about 85 percent of cattle deaths.
The Council of Ministers yesterday evaluated the emergency situation and the impact of the rains, gales and drought on more than 528,000 hectares of the country, declaring that the emergency situation had stabilized and was under control.
The Mozambican government has approved a 500 million meticais contingency budget, of which 200 million meticais has been allocated to the National Institute of Natural Disaster Management. This amount is thought insufficient, however, and the government has launched an appeal for contributions to help those in need.
The rains have continued to batter northern Mozambique, with 1,200 houses completely destroyed and about 280 classrooms and nine medical units partially destroyed or damaged.
