Police arrest two over alleged illegal land sale scam in Matola

Thirty-six Mozambican citizens have been arrested abroad for international drug trafficking in 2023, compared to 33 in the previous year, according to the ‘Domingo’ newspaper.
The majority of the arrests occurred in Brazil (21), followed by Portugal, Thailand, India, with two, and Angola, China, Ethiopia, Qatar, Dubai, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Mauritius and Zambia with one arrest each.
Last year, 25 foreign citizens were detained in Mozambique, compared to 80 in 2022. Ten Nigerians, three South Africans, two Eswatini nationals, two Tanzanians, two Malawians, two Colombians, two Mexicans, one Congolese and one Senegalese were detained.
The foreign individuals detained in Mozambique were involved in trafficking cocaine, heroin, and ingredients for the production of synthetic drugs.
Mozambican authorities detained an undisclosed number of national citizens for drug-related crimes, the majority for production, sale, trafficking and consumption of cannabis sativa (“soruma”).
The drug route
According to the ‘Jornal Moçambique, ‘Mozambique is a drug transit port on the Afghanistan – Pakistan – Pemba – Zambézia and Maputo – South Africa routes for methamphetamine, amphetamine and heroin.
For cocaine trafficking, the route is generally São-Paulo (Brazil) – Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) – Maputo – South Africa.
