A young man thought to be around 30 years old was found dead in the back of a pick-up truck in Maputo on Wednesday morning.
The young man was a familiar sight, doing odd jobs like carrying bags for customers of the Mercado 1 de Junho in Maputo. It was these same people who found him dead in the pickup truck, parked at a nearby yard.
No-one knows for sure the immediate cause of his death, but witnesses told ‘O País’ that illness had left the ill-fated man weakened.
“The problem is that he did not go to the hospital, plus the aggravation of continuing to drink. He refused to go to the hospital. Yesterday, he was in a serious condition, and pretended to go to the health unit at around 3:00 p.m., when he disappeared. This morning, we found him lifeless in the back of the truck,” said Jordão Nguenha, a worker at the shipyard where the victim’s body was found.
Although the disease that consumed him was never definitively diagnosed, witnesses have some ideas. “I couldn’t say he didn’t have another illness, but what cost him his life was almost certainly asthma. He was ill, very ill,” shipyard owner Manuel Foquisso said.
Even less is known of his origin or family.
Crimilda Cumaio, who lives close to the 1 de Junho market, said: “I don’t know anything about him. I only know him by sight because he was a person who worked for local people, but I don’t know the family.”
Local residents also said that the man may have lost his life because of the cold. There are many homeless people in the Mercado 1 de Junho area, all living exposed to the elements.
