Mozambique Elections: Households return to their area of origin after unrest - AIM report
Antonio Biriate, 28 years old, was found dead in the cells of the police station in Matola-Santos in Maputo province on Tuesday. The night of the day before, he had been arrested for theft from a vendor’s stall near his house.
The official cause of Biriate’s death is still unknown, though police say preliminary data point to suicide using his belt, and have said it was negligent of officers to leave him in a cell with the belt.
“Police officers have not taken all the necessary security measures. When an individual is put in the cells, he or she cannot take in any wire, belts or shoe laces. So there was some carelessness on the part of our agents,” said the head of the Public Relations Department of the Provincial Command of Maputo, Juarce Martins, adding that the police are investigating which officers were responsible.
