More than 200,000 jobs were created between January and October 2016 in Mozambique, Labour, Employment and Social Security Minister Vitória Diogo said at the opening ceremony of a seminar on Labour Law in Maputo.
Agriculture, construction and commerce sectors registered the most new jobs in 2016, Diogo said, with 74,966 mostly young people finding employment up until October.
“Improving information on the labour market is vital to aligning labour demand and supply and in formulating and evaluating employment policies,” the minister said, highlighting the importance of the private sector in the process.
For Diogo, in addition to investing in training, the country must standardise employment opportunity data collection mechanisms as a way of ensuring better market clearance.
The government points to the approval of four new Labour Law regulations, including a review of mechanisms and procedures for hiring foreign labour, as elements making the employment market more flexible in 2016, as well as ensuring skills transfer to Mozambican workers.
“The extension of employment opportunities and the improvement of the working conditions are priorities that the Government has identified,” Diogo said.
According to official data, 302,188 jobs were created in Mozambique in 2015.
