One hundred and thirty-five people have been victims of domestic violence and another 79 of sexual violence between December 20 and 26 in Mozambique, the Health Ministry said.
According to Assistant Director of Medical Assistance, Elina Macamo Amado, Mozambican health units registered a 44 percent rise in cases of rape and 16 percent in episodes of domestic violence against the same period last year.
“Last year we registered 55 cases and this year we have 79 people who complained about having been raped. In relation to domestic violence, we registered 116 cases in 2015 and 136 cases this year,” said Macamo Amado.
The deputy director of Medical Assistance lamented the fact that there were children among the victims of rape.
“We urge those responsible for children to exert greater control and surveillance at this time,” said Elina Macamo, who recalls that the trauma resulting from rape cases has serious consequences.
The number of victims who entered hospitals as a result of road traffic accidents, according to Deputy Director of Medical Assistance, was 1,019 against 1,164 in 2015, a year-on-year decline of 12 percent.
