A 20-year-old woman was murdered by unknown individuals on Tuesday morning in Muhalaze neighbourhood, Matola municipality.
The victim lived in the Luís Cabral neighbourhood in Maputo City. After leaving work on Monday night she went to Muhalaze to visit her mother and, on the way, was allegedly stopped by criminals who snatched her belongings, raped and killed her and dumped her body on a building site.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the neighbours told O País how she discovered the young woman’s body on the balcony of a house under construction.
“I saw the tracks from there [the street] to this house, and I went in alone to see what was happening. At first I thought that maybe it was someone who was drunk, but when I went up close to look at her, I saw that she was dead.”
Aida Raul, the victim’s aunt, with whom she worked in one of the restaurants in the city of Matola, says she was with the young woman during her working hours and could not comprehend the reasons for her niece’s murder.
Muhalaze, an expanding neighbourhood in Matola, has a history of high crime rates, according to Celina Honwana, head of Block 35 there.
“What worries us are the houses that are not inhabited. There are many houses without occupants. We do not know the whereabouts of these homeowners, who built the houses and then left,” Honwana complains.
Police agents, members of the National Criminal Investigation Service and the Municipal Police were at the scene yesterday overseeing the removal of the body, but did not provide any statements.
