SACBC: Reiterate call for authorities to address election “disgruntlement” in Mozambique - ...
Figures released on Friday in Maputo by the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Council for Combating HIV/AIDS , Idalina Libombo, during the third National Condom Meeting indicate that Mozambique has an HIV/Aids prevalence rate of 13.2 percent in the population aged 15-49, and 15.4 percent among women.
The figures come from the 2015 Survey of Immunisation, Malaria and HIV/Aids Indicators, and reveal that the highest number of those infected are adolescents and young people.
The Deputy Executive Secretary of the National AIDS Council said that there was an increase in HIV infections, together with a lack of use of preventative methods such as condoms by around 28 percent of women and 24 percent of men.
Idalina Libombo said that the third National Condom Meeting would serve as a platform to discuss distribution methods for this method of prevention, which suffered a setback last year.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) believes that Mozambique should invest more in prevention, and will spend just over US$3.7 million buying condoms for use in the country.
The UNFPA resident representative in Mozambique, Andrea Wojnar, believes that the condoms currently available in Mozambique are insufficient to halt the spread of HIV/Aids.
