19 year-old Sharon dos Santos, daughter of skate hockey coach and player Sandro dos Santos, died on Saturday evening after falling from an apartment on the fourth floor of the old Tempo magazine building in Maputo.
She was alone at home at the time and, because her hands and feet were tied, is presumed to have been thrown from the building. The case is now being investigated by police.
The incident took place at around 7:00 p.m., and the girl’s body was found by four people who were working at the back of the building. “We heard a bang. We thought it was a bag of trash that someone had thrown out. But when we came closer we saw it was a body,” one of the workers told the family of the victim.
“Her legs and hands were tied with scarves,” the victim’s uncle told O Pais. “This makes us believe that she couldn’t have thrown herself out. After identifying the body, I went with the police to the house. We found the door broken in one of the rooms. The cell phone was found on the second floor, near a water meter.”
The source said that both the father and the victim’s boyfriend were interviewed by police. “It was a normal part of any investigation. The girls at the hairdresser say they saw a tall young man in a black sweater they have never seen before come out of the building. We showed them a photo of the boyfriend but they said it was not the same person. But the boyfriend was interviewed as a matter of procedure.”
O País was told by people living nearby that this is not the first time that a bizarre death has happened in the building, which in recent months has been the target of frequent burglaries. The building has only one entrance, but at the time of the incident, the guard on duty was in the basement and claims not to have noticed anything strange.
Sharon dos Santos attended grade 12 at a private school in the capital, and, in addition to studying, was a keen skate hockey player. The family hopes that by Tuesday the investigation will have advanced enough for them to be able to hold a funeral.
