Eighteen people have died and 14 hospitalized after drinking water from a well in Muazana district, Sofala province in central Mozambique, health authorities cited yesterday in the Mozambican press say.
“The initial information we have suggests there was probably a case of drinking contaminated water from a public source located in the area,” Sofala provincial director of health, Chico Farnela, told the press on Wednesday.
Farnela pointed out that only careful field research would identify the real cause, and said he was not ruling out the possibility that the deaths were associated with a recent diarrhea outbreak in the region.
“Only going to the site will set the facts straight,” Farnela said, adding that there are now Police of Mozambique teams in the area working on the case.
