Mozambican police have arrested 16 illegal immigrants of Malawian nationality – 10 men and six women – who were hiding in a residence in Tete, central Mozambique, after having entered the country illegally, the corporation reported on Tuesday.
In addition to the immigrants, three other people, also allegedly Malawians, were arrested, one of whom is said to have rented the house where the immigrants were staying and the other who was to guide the group, spokesperson for the National Migration Service (SENAMI) in Tete, Amélia Direito, told Lusa.
The arrests were made on Friday at a residence in Tete’s Chingodzi neighbourhood, which is near the airport.
According to Direito, the 16 illegal immigrants, who were en route for South Africa, will be repatriated, while the other three detainees remain in police custody pending further clarification.
The group was detected through a joint investigation by SENAMI and the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Direito said.
“It is not known how long they have been in that house. We are working on getting more details,” the SENAMI spokesperson concluded.
