Mozambique: Miguel Cumaio elected president of FENAGRI
More than 15,000 small farmers’ families in Cahora Bassa may face food shortages in the coming months due to the drought that has hit the region.
According to district government spokesman Albertino Sinate, approximately 37,700 hectares of crops, chiefly maize and sorghum, have been lost to drought. Sinate said the rain which fell late and erratically at the beginning of December were not enough for the crops to germinate and grow.
Families are being asked to attempt a second growing season using drought-resistant crops and planting in low-lying areas, and have been given a ton of maize and 5,370 kilograms of sweet potato seed to help their campaign.
