The Maputo-Katembe Bridge, currently one of Maputo’s favourite postcard images, completed its first month of operations on Sunday.
Maputo-Sul, the company that manages the bridge and connecting roads, says the results are encouraging. At least 135,000 vehicles made the crossing, surpassing projections, and the balance is positive despite three serious accidents, killing one.
Meanwhile, Maputo-Sul still has 12 months to notify the contractor of any alterations it deems necessary.
Despite traffic numbers exceeding expectations, the same cannot be said of the financial account, as maintenance costs, at a monthly average of US$16,000, remain far more than what the bridge generates from tolls.
Accounts aside, the bridge remains a focus of trouble for Katembe residents, who submitted a claim to Maputo Sul demanding the reduction of toll rates for local residents. In a letter delivered last week, Maputo South said it had no powers to do so and referred the residents to the ministries of finance and public works.
