Almost 12,000 Mozambicans working in the mines and agricultural sector in South Africa have confirmed their return to Mozambique to spend Family Day (Christmas for Christians) and New Year with family and friends.
The information was confirmed to ‘Notícias’ by João Almeida, delegate of the Mozambican Ministry of Labour in South Africa, who explained that the first miners will leave on the 20th of this month, because many companies stop work activities on the 19th.
Asked whether the programme envisaged takes into account possible disruption by post-election demonstrations, João Almeida said that everything was being taken into account.
“In principle, the workers will return normally to their areas of origin, as happens in other years. We will request support from the police authorities to ensure that the group has a safe journey,” he stated.
Regarding the Mozambique Airlines (LAM) flight that last year transported miners via Chongoene Airport in Gaza, João Almeida said every efforts was being made to ensure that workers had access to air travel.
“Regarding the number of miners who will use the LAM flight, registrations are underway at the mines to obtain the total number of those who wish to travel by air. At the moment, the sector is awaiting some details from LAM,” Almeida said.
Last year, for the first time, just over 3,000 Mozambican miners travelled home by air to spend the holidays with their families.
