Mozambique’s Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has suspended twelve foreign workers in an illegal labour situation. A media statement from the ministry on Saturday says the suspension of these workers resulted from inspection activities held between 4 and 9 January with a particular focus on different types of commercial establishments, including supermarkets, warehouses and houses.
During the campaign, a total of 390 companies were surveyed.
They involved 7,624 workers, 286 of whom were of foreign nationalities and 12 of whom were caught working in the country illegally.
Under Mozambican labour law, they were suspended with immediate effect while their respective employers were fined for over the infraction, the statement said.
Among the 12 suspended are seven Chinese nationals who were working at the Sinohydro Moz Trading company, four South Africans, three of whom are in tourist areas such as Palma Grove and Pisane Lodge.
The other South African worked illegally at Protea and a Portuguese citizen who also worked illegally at the ‘O Parafuso’ Restaurant, the ministry said.
The foreign nationals were caught in the full exercise of their activities without due observance of the one recommended in the Regulation Concerning Mechanisms and Procedures for the Hiring of Citizens of Foreign Nationality, approved by Decree 37 of August 31, 2016.
The decree establishes that “the contracting of foreign citizens is done by means of an application directed to the minister who supervises the area of work or to the entities to whom it delegates.”
The infringing companies will be sanctioned according to the law, the ministry said.
