South African president Jacob Zuma has announced that local government elections will be held on 3 August.
The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Des van Rooyen will follow the necessary legal procedure to proclaim the date and undertake any other requirements.
The president has further encouraged all South Africans who are eligible to vote, in particular, the youth who would be voting for the first time, to register for the local elections during the voter registration weekend of 9 to 10 April 2016, as announced by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
“We urge all those who are eligible to vote register to vote and those who have not checked their names to do so on Saturday and Sunday this weekend so that together we continue to re-affirm and deepen our democracy,” said President Zuma.
IEC READY FOR FINAL REGISTRATION WEEKEND
The IEC says it’s ready for the final voter registration weekend which kicks off on Saturday.
It says it has listened to complaints about irregularities and has rectified procedures.
IEC CEO Mosotho Moepya says to date, there are 25.6 million registered voters on its system and it’s hoping more people will take the opportunity to register this weekend.
He says the IEC has simplified the process.
“We have developed a form where voters can capture their details and simply present that form at the voting stations. It will be online tomorrow.”
Moepya says those without formal addresses will be required to complete two forms to confirm that they live in their voting districts.
