One hundred and thirteen thousand families in Manica are experiencing hunger as a result of the severe drought that blighted the last agricultural campaign. To avoid this situation in future, the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) is encouraging communities to focus on drought-resistant crops.
INGC says communities must be given the means to cope with the droughts and floods that cyclically affect that part of the country. Teixeira Almeida, INGC delegate in Manica, says that the action should be supported by outreach workers in eight communities at province level.
Communities have promised to respond positively to the challenge, which, in addition to its focus on drought-resistant crops, will also address conserving the product of the last agrarian campaign successfully.
Guro, Tambara, Macossa, Machaze and Mossurize districts in Manica have been affected by extreme cyclical weather, leaving the population in need of food.
