Starting yesterday, Maputo and Matola cities and the Boane district will for ten days have reduced drinking water supply as works in the Umbelúzi water treatment plant are completed.
Of its 9,000 cubic metres per hour production capacity, the treatment plant, managed by Águas da Região de Maputo Region (AdeM), is now producing only 6,500 cubic meters per hour, reducing the volume of water available to consumers.
The temporary reduction is due to installation of four new pumps and work to cure leaks, says Gildo Timoteo, director of Production and Distribution at AdeM.
Speaking yesterday to Notícias, Timoteo explained that the work has been going on for some time and is now at the stage where the plant’s partial closure necessary for its completion. This final stage is expected to be finished by February 18.
The director explained that the four new pumps will improve operational redundancy and allow maintenance to be undertaken without major disruption.
AdeM is assuming that the 30 percent reduction in production volumes will be reflected in consumers and has reactivated eight bore holes in blocks 8, 12 and 19 in the neighbourhoods of Ndlavela, 1º de Maio, Singathela, Machava-Km 15, Zona Verde and Zimpeto, near the Vila Olimpica.
