‘Women Here and Now’ at the Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Centre in Maputo
Um Mundo para Todos Dividido – Last chance to visit photo exhibition @ Fortaleza de Maputo
The exhibition “Photography for social transformation – A divided world for all” can be visited at the Maputo Fortress until the 30th of July, with funding from the Spanish Cooperation.
The collective exhibition bring s together seven photographers living in Mozambique:
Alfredo Zúñiga, Nicaraguan, who through his photographic eye tells us personal stories of displaced victims of the conflict in Cabo Delgado;
Dilayla Romeo, Hispano-Mozambican, takes us on a plastic tide to raise awareness of the damage that plastic causes to our environment;
Ouri Pota, from Mozambique, who shows us the life of women who cut stones in Tete province, in very unfavourable conditions;
Julio Dengucho, who brings us closer to the lives of underage fishermen, a childhood stolen by work and the need to survive in order to contribute to the family economy;
Julia Mena talks about the inequalities that surround us, especially in cities like Maputo, where extreme wealth and poverty coexist;
Lillian Benny makes a brave approach to the lives of people trapped in drug addiction and their rehabilitation difficulties; and
Yassmin Forte enters Maputo’s urban transport system to tell, from the inside, what it’s like to travel for hours every day to get to work.
This exhibition aims to take a new look at the problems that surround us, a look from the south and a look that does not want to stop learning, both in photographic technique and from the life stories of the most disadvantaged.
As photographer Mauro Pinto, a student of Rangel, says: “When the people grow up, they think they already know everything and ignore the old school wisdom and experience. Personally, I recognize that I know nothing and I am always learning: I learn from my elders, from people my age, with the youngest. …. And I never want to stop learning.”
The exhibition, curated by Honduran photographer Ariel Sosa, can be visited until Sunday, July 30th.
