About the play
This is a play based on the oral tradition of African storytellers, where a single element unfolds into various characters, to the complicity of the audience, portray some magical episodes, parallel to the life of the famous Mozambican tribal king Gungunhana . The text of the play comes from “Ualalapi” (considered one of the best 100 African books of the twentieth century) by award-winning Mozambican writer Ungulani Ba Ka Khosa.
In Gungunhana's time is a set of stories within a story, a work that starts from a historical time and a particular culture and then goes on a universalist and borderless journey.
"Once upon a time there was a Tsonga warrior named Umbangananamani, who had once been married to a beautiful Macua woman named Malice. They had no children. But they tried very hard." This is the motto that starts the great karingana or traditional tale about the life of a simple warrior, but it will quickly become a sequence of other little karinganas that relate curious aspects related to the kingdom of Gungunhana.
