Mozambique: ENI Open Day
The heart of Mucavele
"The Heart of Mucavale" presents the most recent works by Estevão Mucavele, a major name in painting in Mozambique. This exhibition marks the beginning of the new Gonçalo Mabunda project - the Galeria 1834 - whose official opening takes place with the opening of this exhibition.
Estevão Mucavele was born in 1941 in Manjacaze, Mausse (Mozambique), in a family of peasants, Mucavele studied at a Catholic missionary school, but did not go beyond the 3rd year of primary education. At the age of 16, he worked in the mines of South Africa, the place of choice for Mozambicans in search of better economic conditions. He remained there until 1958, when he accepted the job of cleaning up an art gallery in Johannesburg, where he remained until 1966.
At the age of 25, he began to draw, paint and attend art exhibitions and galleries in Cape Town. In 1968 he realized his first individual exhibition and, three years later, he began to devote himself full time to art. In 1975, on the occasion of Independence, he returned to Mozambique where he continued to paint. His unmistakable work makes him one of the most prominent figures of the plastic arts in Mozambique.
