Mozambique: ENI Open Day
The Base is the Floor-Celestino Mudaulane
"The base is the floor", 4th solo exhibition of Celestino Mudaulane. 1st at Machamba Criativa, curated by Pablo Ribeiro.
"Fragments of the periphery, dance of the spirits, selfies, polygamy, creatures and lobolo… some of the stories told by Celestino Mudaulane.
Reflections or perspectives of the reality, the universe and the characters that inhabit Mudaulane’s creative-imagination, have populated his drawings throughout the years. His work invites us to reflect on things of life."
In his latest exhibition at Galeria 111, the Mozambican painter Celestino Mudaulane born in Maputo in 1972 presents a series of drawings that evoke stories and events from his native land. Through the representation of mythical characters, delirious scenarios of fictional and historical narratives, as well as festive, religious and everyday scenes, the artist reports to us a pertinently critical sense of the social, political, economic and cultural relevance of a reality, which is strangely close to us.
By presenting these works in the heart of the capital of the "old empire", Lisbon, the reading of the images is transformed and unveiled. If codes and stories are initially personal to a specific identity, this re-presentation is ineffective and misleads viewers more inattentive and distracted.
