‘Women Here and Now’ at the Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Centre in Maputo
Screening of ‘João Ayres, Independent Painter’ on Thursday, 29 August at 6 p.m. – Guimarães Rosa Institute Maputo
At the request of the public, the Guimarães Rosa Institute (Centro Cultural Brasil-Moçambique) in Maputo, is on Thursday, 29 August, at 6 p.m.- screening this documentary, as part of the 'Black Nankin on a White Background' exhibition. Entrance is free.
The film is about the painter João Ayres (1921-2001), a figure who moved between Mozambique and Portugal and was gradually forgotten in the chronographies of modern Portuguese, European or African art.
It is also about his family – to whom an important collection of his work was left – which is represented here by the current narrative of one of his grandchildren, Diogo Camilo Alves, who has been fighting for the conservation and reactivation of his grandfather's art, so that more people can have access to it. And about the house he built and where he lived, where his works remain and his memory lives on.
