Mozambique: ENI Open Day
Painting and Photographic exhibitions by Nelly Guambe and Rodrigo da Câmara
On November 21 at 18h00, two individual exhibitions will be inaugurated at the Camões - Portuguese Cultural Center in Maputo: "Olhares" by Nelly Guambe and "Espaços" by Rodrigo Bettencourt da Câmara.
Nelly Guambe (Mozambique) shows in "Olhares" some of the work she has developed over the last few months. Paintings on canvas and on paper depict melancholy female figures, through a peculiar and almost scenic language. Guambe's screens can send the audience to a unique and surprising sentimental universe. This is the artist's second solo public appearance in Maputo.
Rodrigo Bettencourt da Câmara (Portugal), in turn, presents the photographic series "Espaços" which allows the viewer to "enter" the work space and process of creation of some of the most renowned Mozambican, Portuguese and Brazilian artists. This is a photographic series in continuity and constant growth that results from the visits of the photographer to the different environments of creation. The work of the artists represented in this exhibition is transversal to different cultural areas and the images are captured in movement. Rodrigo Bettencourt da Câmara presents for the first time his work in Mozambique, a country he visits with some frequency and with which he maintains a professional relationship and friendship.
These exhibitions will be from on Monday to Friday from 11h00 am to 18h00
Parallel to the exhibition period Rodrigo Bettencourt da Câmara will promote a photography workshop called "From Creation to Execution", which will take place from Monday 26th to Wednesday 28th November 2018.
About Nelly Guambe:
Nelly Guambe is a Mozambican artist born in 1987 in the Province of Inhambane. She lives and works in Maputo. Guambe’s paintings explore and reflect on women’s emotions and circumstances. Using a combination of drawing and painting her work is subtly haunting yet delicate and restrained, evoking a feeling of restlessness that does not aim to resist nor represent the disquietude of the universe, but instead intends to express. Finding her inspiration in women whom she encounters in everyday life and work, as well as in herself, her art responds to a powerful urge to document and record their unknown state of being.
About Rodrigo Bettencourt da Câmara:
Rodrigo Bettencourt da Câmara (Lisbon, 1969). Visual artist with diverse training, in Drawing, Painting, Multimedia, Photography and Conservation and Restoration. He has exhibited his work regularly since 1990, not only in Portugal, but also outside his country (notably in Spain, Brazil, Mozambique, Ireland, France, USA, China and India), where he has integrated several exhibitions. His most recent solo exhibition, "Spaces", at Chiado 8 Arte Contemporânea, in Lisbon, stands out.
