Nduduzo Makhathini: Inner Dimensions Collective
Born on 24 September 1982, Nduduzo Makhathini is a renowned South African jazz artist from Umgungundlovu, Pietermaritzburg. Nduduzo grew up in uMgungundlovu near Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. He was raised in a musical environment, his mother was a pianist and his father a guitarist thus exposed to different ranges of music including traditional Zulu music. He was a member of the school choir, he also sang at church until he finished school. He began learning jazz piano upon completing high school. He completed his diploma in Jazz Piano in 2005.
In 2006, he performed with voice featuring Marcus Wyatt, Herbie Tsoaeli, Morabo Molajele and Sydney Mnisi. In 2008, he joined legendary jazz saxophonist Zim Ngqawana’s Zimology Quartet and toured with them throughout Europe and the U.S. Following that, in 2009 he joined Carlo Mombeli’s band and continued to tour with the Zimology Quartet. He has also worked with musicians to the likes of Andile Yanana, Kesivan Naidoo, Sidney Mavundla, Ayanda Sikade, Omagugu, Feya Feku, McCoy Mrubata, Mthunzi Mvubu and Malcolm Jiyane, Xolani Sithole, Mbusi Khoza, Lindiwe Maxolo, Tumi Mogorosi, Sisa Sophazi and Jonathan Crossley. He performed in Swaziland with Adam Glasser featuring Concord Nkabinde.
As of April 2016, Makhathini has released three albums namely ‘Sketches of Tomorrow’ (2014), ‘Mother Tongue’ (2014). 'Mother Tougue was nominated in the Best Jazz category at the SAMA’s 2015. His third album is ‘Listening To The Ground’ (released in 2015).
He has produced a number of albums over recent years with acclaimed jazz musicians. The album 'Zilindile' with Omagugu won Metro Fm’s Best Contemporary Jazz category in 2013 and the 'Time' album with Lindiwe Maxolo was a SAMA nominee.
Makhathini won the jazz category at the the 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist Award. The event is part of the National Arts Festival where a maximum of five awards are made annually in any one of the disciplines of drama, music, jazz, visual art, dance and film. He is also the first recipient of the British Academy Newton Advanced Fellowship Masters Scholarship.
He has performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Cradle at Nirox, The Lagos Jazz Series Nigeria and Ljubljana Jazz Festival in Europe.
