About Mr. Freddy
Mr. Freddy is a duo of versatile drummer Mwesigwa Kisaakye and multi-instrumentalist Ralph Louis Smit. Their music resides in a sonic realm that is based on Fourth World premises: improvisation, world music, electronic palettes and psychedelic tones. Their performances are intimate, intense, but interesting and entertaining, often described as a trance. With an avant-garde and at the same time traditional sound, they are a unique voice of alternative instrumental music coming from the Kingdom of eSwatine.
Ralph Smit, a key figure in Swaziland's traditional and improvised alternative music scene, has actively created a niche to promote alternative and collaborative projects by local and international artists. Growing up in Swaziland, he played several traditional instruments before turning to trumpet and improvised and electronic music.
Mwesigwa Kisaakye, a drummer born in Uganda, raised and resident in Swaziland, is one of the first drummers in the kingdom. His unique approach and rhythmic sensitivity made him the resident drummer of Tlale Makhene's Swazi band, as well as session musician for people like Cameron Ward. He played with the best musicians in the country, played on award-winning recordings and is known for his versatility and innovation.
