Marrajazz Kids Workshop: Marrabenta and Jazz for Great Little Musicians – by Timóteo Cuche
As part of the celebrations of International Jazz Day, Mozambican saxophonist Timóteo Cuche will on Saturday, April 12, at 10:30 am, in the Auditorium of the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center, conduct a jazz workshop aimed at children aged 6 to 12.
In his workshop, Cuche introduces children to some of the classic Marrabenta songs and, together, they will explore how these songs can be transformed into a jazz context. The musician will also work with iconic jazz themes, which are part of the core repertoire of this genre in Maputo, highlighting the connections and influences between both styles.
The workshop, for youngsters aged six to 12, in free. Children who have musical instruments are invited to bring them along.
About Timóteo Cuche
Timóteo Cuche is a Mozambican saxophonist and musician, a PhD candidate in Music (Ethnomusicology) at the University of Aveiro. He holds a Master's degree in Music from the same institution (2021) and a degree in Music from the School of Communication and Arts at Eduardo Mondlane University (2011). He currently teaches saxophone at the latter.
He completed an academic mobility program at the Helsinki University of the Arts – Sibelius Academy, in the departments of Jazz, Global Music and Arts Management, Society and Creative Entrepreneurship. He studied saxophone with several renowned teachers, including Orlando da Conceição (Mozambique), Will Ramsay (Germany), Kaisa Siirala, Petri Puolitaival and Jussi Kannasti (Finland), as well as João Martins (Portugal).
His interests include Mozambican popular music, collaborative processes, creative interactions, migration, music industry, marketing, postcolonial studies, music and education, as well as music as intangible cultural heritage.
