Maputo-Katembe Bridge: A reflection on the City of Maputo
On November 10 the city of Maputo celebrates its 131st anniversary, coinciding with the inauguration of the largest bridge in the country linking the city center of Maputo to the Katembe district, the "Maputo-Katembe" bridge.
The bridge not only changes the aesthetics of the city, but also generates expectations of the citizens and the rulers on the future of the city and consequently on its own future as citizens. While on the one hand the citizens projected on the bridge the improvement of the mobility between the two "axes" (despite the recent debate on the fees that must be paid for the crossing), the government also sees in the bridge the opportunity launched to boost tourism , the real estate industry and urban development in general.
The improvement scenarios that can be seen with the Maputo-Katembe bridge are also a scene of memories of the loss of the right to live and work in the city of Maputo, in the name of progress, and allocated to districts far from development such as Nkobe, Tchumene and Tenga.
With this seminar the DCU intends to take advantage of the week of celebration of the city of Maputo as an opportunity to reflect on how the different actors that make and use the city of Maputo build the same, ramp up? This debate will have as an entry point the processes involved in the construction of the Maputo-Katembe bridge and the expectations it will generate for the citizens.
