Mozambique: ENI Open Day
Maidens of War debate
The last event scheduled for MFF 2018 - a debate on the relationship between History and Photography in connection with the exhibition "Maidens of War" - will take place in Fortaleza de Maputo.
The debate includes the photographer Amilton Neves, the historian António Sopa, the former military officer of the Portuguese colonial army Luis Loforte and the curator of Fortaleza de Maputo Moisés Timba. The moderation is done by Rui Trindade (MFF).
The exhibition "Madrinhas de Guerra" by Amilton Neves, curated by Christine Cibert, is a project that tells the story of the Mozambican women who participated in the National Women's Movement of 1961-1974
These women were sponsored by the Portuguese government to provide moral support to soldiers fighting on the front lines during the Mozambican War of Independence.
Many of these women were rewarded with influential positions in society and the upper classes and some even received houses given by the Portuguese government.
In 1974, when the independence war ended with a cease-fire agreement between the Mozambican forces of FRELIMO and the Portuguese Government, the National Women's Movement officially ended. Following independence, these women were ostracized from society for their role in supporting the colonial forces.
The photographic project "Madrinhas de Guerra" reflects this extremely important - but often forgotten - piece of history in Mozambique, visiting the homes of the Madrinhas de Guerra who still live in Maputo today and embody the past of the opulence lived during the support of the Portuguese government and the subsequent marginalization felt after independence.
