Mozambique: ENI Open Day
Exhibition From the Tide to the Canindé: inspiration for the peripheries
The opening of the literary and photographic exhibition "Da Maré ao Canindé: inspiration for the peripheries" will be held on November 20 at 6:00 p.m., which traverses images of the favelas of Maré, north of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in dialogue with excerpts from the works of Afro-Brazilian writer Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914-1977): "Room of Eviction: Diary of a Favela" and "House of Masonry: Diary of a Former Favela."
From Carolina's books we highlight topics such as eviction, hunger, water supply, right to housing, politics, family, gender relations, education, racism and migration in the Northeast. Among the women living in Maré, we highlight D. Orosina Vieira, the first resident of Morro do Timbau; D. Vera Marta, niece of D. Orosina and employee of the Museu da Maré; and the writer Ana Maria de Souza, Maré's first poet to release a book. Three women who stand out for their life trajectories and also for their actions in support of the memory of the Maré and its community museum. They are our elders.
This work is one of the results of the actions of the reading wheel that took place between 2013 and 2014, at the Maré Museum of the Center for Studies and Solidarity Actions of Maré (CEASM), with the participation of young people from different communities in the set of favelas Tide.
Beginning in 2015, the reading wheel began to be held in a decentralized way in several points of Rio de Janeiro and even in other Brazilian states (Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte and Espírito Santo). In the same year, they received the All for One Brazil Award from Readers of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture. In addition to the Local Actions of the Municipal Department of Culture of Rio de Janeiro two consecutive years - 2015 and 2016.
Between February and May 2018, the exhibition and the reading wheels were held in Luanda, the capital of Angola - for the first time outside Brazil, at the Centro Cultural Brasil-Angola (CCBA).
