‘Women Here and Now’ at the Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Centre in Maputo
‘Daughters of the Sea’ by Pekiwa @ Camões Maputo
The Camões - Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo is showing an exhibition by Mozambican artist Pekiwa entitled 'Filhas do Mar [Daughters of the Sea].
The exhibition presents new works created over the last two years. Pekiwa develops his work using wooden materials that he collects and acquires on the Island of Mozambique, as well as used iron that he finds on a daily basis, especially among urban scrap in the province of Maputo.
'Filhas do Mar' also highlights the natural erosion of materials by the sea.
The exhibition expresses concerns prompted by the artist's journey, and brings to attention the need to protect the environment and respect biodiversity, highlighting especially the protection of sea turtles.
This exhibition is part of a partnership between Banco Millenium BIM and Camões to support and promote Mozambican artists, as part of the Social Responsibility program “Mais Moçambique pra Mim”, whose action focuses on projects related to Education and Culture, Children's/Youth Sports, Corporate Volunteering, Health and Community Development and the Environment, in a continuous commitment to the development of structuring and sustainable projects throughout the national territory
Christened Nelson Ferreira, Pekiwa was born in Maputo in 1977 and has been sculpting since childhood, having initially worked with his father, the sculptor Govane.
He has participated in several national and international group exhibitions since 1991, his journey towards individual exhibitions beginning in 2002.
His work is represented in public and private collections in Mozambique, Portugal, South Africa, Botswana, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Senegal, Spain, Netherlands, USA, England, Japan, Italy and Australia.
'Filhas do Mar' will run at the Camões - Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo until August 31st, from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
