Camões Maputo hosts ‘Sérgio Somos Nós’
Continuadores present: ‘Filhos do mar’ with Trkz and Tiago Correia-Paulo
Ailton José Matavela (Trkz) & Tiago Correia-Paulo (A Million Things) met at a party in early 2017. They had a small talk that culminated in the great idea of making music together. After a few more meetings in non-festive environments, both were able to develop dialogue and share their artistic journeys.
Without being in the same city, they began to exchange sound ideas via the internet, and it was only a matter of time before they had some themes, although they were still built in sketches.
The next step would be to set aside time to grow ideas and turn everything into an eventual concert. For this, both thought that the ideal would be to obtain an artistic residence somewhere in Maputo. The wonderful CCFM auditorium was the first choice. In exchange for the exclusivity of presenting for the first time the concert in Maputo at CCFM, the space was thus given to them for two weeks to compose and rehearse.
Ailton and Tiago thought it appropriate to call this collaboration 'Continuadores' (followers). They wanted the music to somehow cause nostalgia to the listeners. The idea of past, present, and future would be one of the greatest inspirations; the notion of time, an instrument that could be used.
The 'Continuadores' are eager to work with narratives and stories. There is a need to create a theme for each presentation. In this first exhibition, and also in the context of the cultural week of the "Our Sea", the chosen theme was the idea of the 'Children of the Sea'. The work integrates very deep themes and circulates around the mystery of life, the discovery of light and the cycle of evolution of beings, the apparition in the open sea and arrival to the coast. It also speaks of the role of the sea in history, the same being known as a place of transit since prehistoric times.
The sound of this project is immersed in a context of depth and space. With a mix of electronic, analog and acoustic sounds in a more experimental way.
The great challenge is to capture all these ideas and transform them into something that can entertain and captivate an audience with sounds that bring light and shadow to life and contemplate the origin of their existence from the premise that "We Are All Children of the Sea ".
