About the movie
Year 1975. After centuries of Portuguese colonization, Mozambique becomes an independent state. The new regime seeks to clear the streets of prostitution. Thus, 500 prostitutes are forcibly sent to an educational center somewhere in the jungle where they are forced to learn new rules of coexistence and rediscover their role in the new homeland.
Margarida is a 16-year-old teenager who went there by mistake as she tried to buy her trousseau for her wedding. Innocent, she has no sins to atone. Living an unwated life, the women unite to come with a plan to escape from that place. Margarida becomes the representation of freedom and purity in a place where, according to one of the characters, "the comrade is worse than the settler".
Directed by Mozambican writer and filmmaker Licínio Azevedo, the movie premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. The cast is formed by a group of Mozambican actors: Sumeia Maculuva, Hermelinda Cimela, Odilia Cossa, Ana Maria, Iva Mugalela, Rosa Mário and Ilda Gonzales.
