Mozambique: ENI Open Day
Chico 60
"Chico 60" is the concept chosen to justify the celebration of the sixtieth birthday of the Mozambican musician Chico António.
For the night of April 13, the musician will present unpublished themes, the result of his research in the last years after the release of the CD "Memories" in October 2014.
For the musician, the concert "Chico 60" is the beginning of a series of activities that will mark the celebration of his 60 years of life. The concert is also a form of joint celebration and thanks to all who have directly or indirectly supported the development of the musician's career.
"It will be a different night, I will be with my friends, fans, partners ... I bring unpublished themes, but I know that the public will not let me leave the stage without singing some successes ..." - explains Chico António
For the "Chico 60" concert, Chico António will be accompanied by Mozambican musicians Carlos Gove, on bass, Rufus Maculuve on keyboard, Stélio Zoé on drums, Jorge Domingos on guitar, Timóteo Cuche on saxophone, Onésia and Paulo Muholove on choirs and Nico M'Sagarra (France) in the percussion.
Chico António was born on May 13, 1958, in the district of Magude, in the province of Maputo. He grew up at the boarding school of José de Lhanguene Mission and when he was nine years old he became a soloist with a choir of 50 people in the church, while he began learning trumpet and solfege over 12 years.
Between 1979/1992, he was part of groups that composed music based on traditional Mozambican rhythms such as: Grupo Instrumental n°1 de música ligeira, RM (grupo da Rádio Moçambique) and Orquestra Marrabenta Star de Moçambique. He then toured in countries such as England, Holland, Italy, France, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Zimbabwe, Guinea Conakry and Cape Verde.
In 1990, he won the RFI Discoveries prize (Radio France International) and received a scholarship to study basic piano techniques, arrangements and sound capture in the studio.
Chico António has worked in laboratories of fusion experiences of traditional instruments and rhythms with modern instruments and rhythms, encouraging professionals and the new generation to work in this direction in order to find a way of being the Mozambican musician.
On April 4, 2018, the Municipal Council of Maputo awarded the musician Chico António the Career Award in recognition of actions to promote and enhance Mozambican culture at national level as well as across borders.
