Mozambique: ENI Open Day
African Night with Xembha and guests
Xembha is an Mozambican musician born on September 17, 1952. She will have Xidiminguana and Chico Antonio as her guests.
Domingos Honwana, better known as Xidiminguana, was born in the province of Gaza in the town of Vuthu in the district of Bilene in 1936. Son of peasant parents, he fed cattle as a child, as did many children in his area.
In 1949, Xidiminguana learned to play his first guitar made of tin and fishing lines, with a friend named Rafael Lhonguana, who later died. In the same year, the artist was able to buy a guitar from an acquaintance who had come from South Africa and who had no money to return to the neighboring country where he worked. "I paid him with a 50 kilogram bag of corn," says the artist.
Xidiminguana has had a guitar in his hand for more than 60 years. With his different form of playing, he excelled in music, for engaging in storytelling through music.
On August 15, 1954, he arrived in the city of Lourenço Marques, (now Maputo) and got his first job as a domestic employee in the Alto Maé neighborhood, where he remained until joining the Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM), where he worked until his retirement in 1996.
In 1962, already in CFM, Xidiminguana got more time to practice playing with his guitar and took the opportunity to walk in popular neighbourhoods, where he played for his friends. It was these same friends who encouraged him to play and record his own songs.
Chico António was born in 1958, and was a shepherd before learning the trumpet and music theory. He was a member of bands such as RM and Orquestra Star de Moçambique
